WebbliWorld takes global warming seriously

Educating kids on global warming was one of our main reasons for creating WebbliWorld. December is WWF Polar Bear Month on WebbliWorld.  We’ve got a fun ‘Name The Webbli Polar Bear’ competition and we’ll be running articles about polar bears throughout December. The crisis polar bears are facing is very topical and perfectly illustrates the impact of global warming. We’ll be talking about the threats they face and the impact man’s activities are having on their environment. At WebbliWorld, we want kids to feel that they can make a difference – that by changing their behaviours they can change the world they live in. This is a thread that runs through our site. And our partnership with WWF ensures that the information we present on site is accurate and trustworthy.  The key with kids, of course, is hitting the right note.  WebbliWorld is worthwhile, without being worthy. As our strapline says, ‘One Planet – everything to play for!’

WANTED - A NAME FOR THIS POLAR BEAR!

December is WWF Polar Bear Month on WebbliWorld.com.  We're featuring all sorts of fun and facts about polar bears, climate change and how we can all help to save their habitat.

The fun starts on December 1st with our Name The Webbli Polar Bear Competition. The WWF/Webbli Polar Bear was created for WebbliWorld by world-famous animators, Aardman. But, he doesn't have a name! How will Santa be able to deliver his presents? So, he wants you to think of one.

Explorer and Arctic swimmer, Lewis Gordon Pugh, will pick the winner. There are lots of great prizes including a WWF Polar Bear Adoption Box, WWF cuddly polar bear toys, copies of the wonderful Puffin book,  The Last Polar Bears by Harry Horse and exclusive WebbliWorld T-shirts. And, the winning name will be used on the site and in any future Aardman animations featuring the bear.

So, grab your woolly mittens and that dodgy scarf your Granny knitted and discover all things polar at www.webbliworld.com!

Jeremy Strong picks our WebbliWinners

Our WWF/Puffin Writing Competition produced some great entries and the winners were picked by top Puffin author, Jeremy Strong. Jeremy’s books, including, ‘My Brother’s Famous Bottom Gets Pinched’ and ‘Beware! Killer tomatoes’ are hugely popular with children so it was fantastic to have him on board.

We asked children to write a story about how their Webbli saves Bernie the Iceberg from global warming. There were seven finalists in all and first prize went to WebbliCheesy for his original and funny story about Bernie the Iceberg. Jeremy Strong said, ‘I LIKED THE HUMOUR OF THIS STORY. IT MAKES ITS POINT WITHOUT BEING TOO SERIOUS AND DEPRESSING, WHICH IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING! I LIKED THE OVERALL OPTIMISM TOO.’ WebbliCheesy wins an Apple iPod Video, a cuddly WWF polar bear, a set of Jeremy Strong books and an exclusive WebbliWorld T-shirt.  Well done, WebbliCheesy!

Runner-up prizes went to WebbliBooman, WebbliHutch, WebbliDartio, WebbliBeaver, WebbliSteph and WebbliVampire. And, we’ll be featuring several of these stories on WebbliWorld next month.

Thanks to Puffin’s generosity, every entrant also qualified for a set of Jeremy Strong books to inspire and entertain them!  It’s great to see kids putting so much effort into creative writing and also tackling such a weighty issue as global warming. Well done, all!

December is WWF Polar Bear Month on WebbliWorld

Grab your woolly mittens and that dodgy scarf your Granny knitted because next month, WebbliWorld goes to the Arctic. With the help of WWF, we’ll be featuring all sorts of stories about polar bears, their environment and the threats they face from global warming. As the ice melts, their hunting grounds are literally disappearing beneath their paws. Our main characters, Wij, Wez and Wanda will highlight the main issues and there will also be a fun ‘Name the Webbli Polar Bear’ competition.  More on that, soon.  Plus, we’ll shortly be announcing the winners of the WWF/Puffin Writing Competition chosen by children’s author, Jeremy Strong.

What can kids do for global warming?

I think everyone agrees now that global warming is going to dramatically affect the living conditions for plants and animals across the globe. And, most scientists believe that the burning of fossil fuels is the main cause of it.

We don’t have to wait to tell our kids to do something about global warming until they are grown up. People of all ages use energy and we can all help slow down global warming by saving energy. By teaching children to understand that everything they do has an impact on their environment, we can instil them with a sense of responsibility that they will take forward into their adult lives.

There are many ways to teach young people to save energy in everyday life, not least through the example we ourselves set as parents.

TVs, lamps and computers use electricity. Cookers, washing machines and heaters use gas or electricity. If you want to find ways to use these household appliances more energy-efficiently, then have a look at the home energy saving tips at Mummies Coffee Break. These include turning off lights when they are not needed, preventing your computer from hibernating and unplugging unused devices.

It seems that British children already have favourite ways of saving energy. In a survey by E.ON UK which let kids rate a number of ideas aimed at changing the way we use energy, the most popular option was “walking to school”.

WebbliWorld.com cares about our children’s future and the concerns we all feel as parents about the world they must inherit. That’s why we encourage children to help stop global warming and to conserve the natural environment. For this reason we have been working with the WWF, one of the world's biggest conservation networks, to provide children with accurate information about the natural world. We want to empower children – to give them the understanding that allows them to make a difference. It’s very important to us that children believe they can change their world.

If every Webbli saves energy, respects the environment and recycles, we believe we can all start to make a difference.
